Today I had a conservation with Thomas Slonaker the Lehigh County Controller. He was upset about my comments, in regard to his attendance, at the County Commissioners Meeting (candidates) before the Primary last spring.
In all fairness, I can only report on the times, I personally saw him at a meeting. He may have been at other meetings, when I was not aware of his presence. To make this very simple I only heard him speak twice at any meetings. Please don't take these comments as an retraction of my previous statements. This is just a clarification. I only report the facts as I see them. I don't make things up to suit my purpose. My comments are a result of my being at the meetings and what I saw or heard.
In the name of Economic Development the County Commissioners voted to pass Bill 2011-25.
Commissioner Creighton was the first to show his enthusiasm for this bill. Followed by Commissioner Browning, McCarthy and Dougherty.
Three of these four Commissioners claim to be our Conservative Representatives on this board but, ATTITUDE speaks louder the words.
Although I did expect this bill would and should be passed. I didn't expect such euphoria about it. This was a pass through Grant from the State. I have nothing against Avantor taking the 3 Million dollars they were offered. It makes good business sense for them. My problem is this is CORPORATE WELFARE.
“These are high paying private sector jobs that we’re bringing to Lehigh County and we’re doing that with the assistance of our new governor and in cooperation with our county executive,” said Commissioner Chairman Dean Browning.
Not everyone was pleased that public funds were being used to lure a private company to the state. Stan Bialecki, a Tea Party activist from Bethlehem who is a regular at commissioners meetings, said sarcastically, “It’s really so nice to see everybody so enthusiastic to spend state money to buy jobs for Pennsylvania.”
Commissioners are pleased to bring the jobs to the county. Commissioner Dean Browning said the company's salaries average $87,000, which is well above the national average.
"Nice to see everyone's so enthusiastic about spending $3 million to buy jobs for Pennsylvania," Bialecki said. "I don't think it's a good idea."
Browning retorted by saying he could see that Bialecki felt it was better to leave the high-paying jobs in New Jersey.
"It's at these trying economic times we should be going into overdrive to get more companies to move into Lehigh County," Commissioner Percy Dougherty said.
Corporate Welfare is not how we should be spending State Tax money. This is "BUYING" jobs and not real Community Development. The way to attract companies to Pa.is to make it a good place to do business. If anyone is fool enough to believe that paying Companies to move to your location is a good idea, I have a bridge to sell them.
Well its time to Elect a New Chairman for the Lehigh County Commissioners. Dean Browning was Chair this year with Danial McCarthy as Vice Chair.
I know that Dean would like to be Chair again. I don't know if that will happen. He has lost support from not only the Democrats but, from most of the Republicans also. Percy Dougherty would like to be Chair again. Nah. He and Gloria Hamm voted against changing the role of commissioners being on the Boards of “County Leeches”. The “Quality of Life” people, that will suck every last dime, from the tax payers if they could. Over the past year Dean has played the middle. It would seem that he sets up the vote, so that he, has the deciding vote. A lot of votes are (4-4) with the deciding vote, in may cases, with him going against his party. Not that voting with your Party or not, is a deal breaker, but this happens enough times for me to notice. In fact, I wait for it now. I almost know what he going to do before he votes. This seems like a power play. I could be wrong.
My choice, would be William Hensel.
Yes he is a Democrat, and yes I almost never agree with Bill.
Yes. he never saw a project that he didn't want to spend money on.
Yes he believes that the private sector is getting raises in this economy.
Yes, he has been in government all his life.
Yes, he believes that the government needs to fix all the problems and only government can do so.
No, he has no political future to worry about. Unlike Dean
No, he is not afraid to take on the administration and would hold them to account.
No, we can't expect him to vote any differently, then he has in the past.
Yes ,we can expect him to be diligent in his pursuit of finding what needs to be cut from the budget.
Yes, he will work hard to get everyone involved in the budget.
Yes, he has integrity and would not let any outside influences, influence him.
No, he would not vote on anything, that he was directly involved in, outside of his office.
Plain and simple. Bill is an Honest man. He believes what he believes. I'm working on that. I don't think I'll make much progress, but I'm trying.
My first choice for Vice Chair would be Glenn Eckhart next would be Andy Roman.
I have nothing to do with who gets chosen for these positions, but thought you might like my perspective.
