Two issues at the Commissioners meeting of interest was the Salaries of the row Officers and the on going saga of the County Sheriff and the cost of carry permits.
Several people spoke on this issue including Rep. Gary Day 187th who stated that he had gotten involved as a result of being contacted by David Green who had been questioning the increase in fees for months. Rep. Day had Contacted Carolyn Bunny Welsh who is the President of the PA Sheriff's association. He indicated that she will have any Sheriff Departments that are charging more then the State mandated fee of 25.00 lower their fees. We will now wait to see what the final outcome will be.
The raise in salaries of the Row Officers pay was defeated but not without a fight. Commissioner Jones was absent from the meeting so a vote of 4 for and 4 against was the out come so it didn't pass.
Before the vote Commissioner McCarthy attempted to defer the vote to the next meeting but, that was also defeated. the votes were as follows.
Commissioners Dougherty,Eckhart,Roman and Creighton NO.
Commissioners Browning,McCarthy,Hamm and Hansell YES.
This is not dead. Commissioner Jones can bring this issue up in the future with another bill.
I would like to thank all the members of our group for attending this meeting. As a note Scott Ott was also in attendance.
What a free for all. We had 17 +/- Commissioners / Council members in attendance. If this proposal had passed these people would have had a real problem administering this Health Department. Since it didn't pass I will focus on Lehigh County.
Northampton County rejected the proposal and I don't think that will change. This Council has some very conservative members and intend to hold the line on spending and larger Government.
Lehigh County in another story. Lets go commissioner by commissioner .
Percy Dougherty was the Leader of the Band. He is in favor of this Health Department and thinks we really need it. In his defense he stated that he would not raise taxes to support this project and will insist on finding the money in the budget.
Commissioners Browning,Eckhart and Creighton voted against the plan.
Commissioner Roman has this thing about Bio-terrorism and this seems to be his main focus. If the Health department were to address this item to his satisfaction they would have his Vote.
Commissioners Jones,McCarthy,Hamm and my favorite Hansell are all YES votes. Some of the comments by these Commissioners were really off the wall. But this is not unusual. Normally the only one that makes any sense is Commissioner McCarthy and he really didn't have anything to say. Although we disagree more times then not, I respect his position on most issues.
This program may not be over, it may be over as a Bi-County program but in Lehigh County we have Commissioners that will bring this up again and again and again, get my point.
